Much of town lies inside the Blue Mountain Forest and Game Preserve (Corbin Park), a roughly 26,000-acre private reserve ringed by a 26-mile fence and stocked with deer, elk, and wild boar, so wildlife pressure runs high. NH DHHS 2007-2010 surveillance found 85 percent of Sullivan County's sampled adult blacklegged ticks carried the Lyme bacterium, the highest county rate in the state.

New London sits on a hilly ridge in western Merrimack County in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region, bordered on the west by Lake Sunapee and holding Little Sunapee Lake and Pleasant Lake, with Colby-Sawyer College at its center and the villages of Elkins and Otterville. Its wooded, lakeside lots create prime blacklegged-tick habitat; NH DHHS 2007-2010 surveillance found 53.6 percent of adult blacklegged ticks sampled in Merrimack County infected with the Lyme bacterium, and DHHS reported that the state's highest Lyme rates occurred in Rockingham, Strafford, Hillsborough, and Merrimack counties.
