How Reflex Bleeding Works

 

Reflex bleeding is a defense strategy used by many beetles. When an Asian beetle is pinched, squeezed, or otherwise disturbed, it increases pressure inside its body. This forces out a small amount of hemolymph—the insect equivalent of blood—through joints in its legs.

Why the Fluid Is Yellow
