Old-house borers are wood-boring beetles whose larvae (the immature stage before becoming an adult beetle) feed directly on wood. They can cause serious problems to the framing lumber in homes, especially if the wood has a high moisture content. Framing lumber refers to the main structural wooden parts of a house—like studs, joists, and beams—that hold up walls, floors, and the roof.
Old-house borers (Hylotrupes bajulus) are a type of longhorn beetle. The adult beetle itself does not harm wood; it’s the larvae (white, worm-like grubs) that do the damage. The adults lay eggs in cracks or exposed wood of softwoods (woods like pine, spruce, and fir that are often used in house framing). When the eggs hatch, larvae burrow into and feed on the wood for years.
Within the wood, the larvae tunnel extensively as they eat. Over several years, this tunneling creates hollowed-out galleries inside the lumber. While you may not see the problem from the outside at first, the wood inside can be seriously weakened or even reduced to powder. Here's what happens:
Framing lumber, especially if it’s not properly dried or is exposed to moisture (like in crawl spaces, basements, or attics), attracts old-house borers. They prefer the softer woods often used for framing. Old houses aren’t the only target—newer homes with damp lumber can be at risk too.
The damage can range from mild (cosmetic surface holes) to severe (structural failure). In serious cases, the wood can become so weakened that it no longer safely supports the parts of the house it's supposed to. Most infestations go unnoticed for years because the damage happens inside the wood, out of sight.
If you see oval exit holes, find fine sawdust (frass), hear clicking or scraping noises in the wood, or suspect you have these beetles, take it seriously:
