What causes hives on a dog that's been outside at dusk?

Hives, medically called urticaria, are raised, itchy welts that appear when the body releases histamine in response to an allergen — commonly insect bites or stings, plants, medications, or other environmental triggers. In dogs they often show as bumps with the hair standing up over them, and swelling is most noticed on the face, lips, muzzle, and around the eyes. The 'after dusk outdoors' timing is a clue but not a diagnosis: dusk is peak activity time for mosquitoes and many other biting insects, so an insect-bite trigger is plausible, but pollen, plants, or other allergens picked up during the same outdoor time are also possible causes.

Most hives do resolve on their own once the triggering allergen clears, often within 24 to 48 hours, and veterinarians commonly treat them with appropriate antihistamines when needed. What breathing or behavior changes mean this is an emergency, not just hives?

Watch specifically for noisy or labored breathing, sudden weakness or collapse, vomiting or diarrhea appearing alongside the hives, or gums that look pale rather than their normal pink. Any of those combined with hives points toward a more serious reaction, potentially anaphylaxis, and means an emergency vet visit right away rather than waiting to see if the hives fade. By contrast, welts and mild itching with your dog otherwise acting normally generally falls into the call-your-vet-soon category — still worth a same-day call, but not a middle-of-the-night emergency on their own.
