How exactly does a mosquito give my dog heartworm?

The mosquito is a required middle step, not a passive carrier. It first bites an already-infected animal — a dog, or a wild host like a coyote or fox — and picks up microscopic larvae called microfilariae from that animal's blood. Over roughly 10 to 14 days inside the mosquito, those larvae develop into infective larvae. When that same mosquito then bites your dog, it deposits those larvae through the bite wound, and over about 6 to 7 months they mature into adult worms living in the heart, lungs, and nearby blood vessels. No mosquito means no transmission at any point in that chain — there's no direct dog-to-dog spread.

If I keep mosquitoes off my property, does my dog still need a preventive?
