    Mow short and clear the edges regularly

    Keep turf mowed short and clear tall grass and brush from lawn margins so sunlight reaches and dries the ground layer. Ticks depend on humidity to survive and desiccate quickly in dry, sunny, short-cut turf, which is why a well-maintained lawn is genuinely poor tick habitat. Make this an ongoing part of your mowing routine rather than a one-time cleanup, since edges left unmowed for even a season can rebuild humid cover.

    Note: Ongoing maintenance once established; a bigger initial cleanup of overgrown edges is more of a weekend project.

    Lay a 3-foot wood-chip or gravel barrier at the woods line

    Install a dry, roughly 3-foot-wide strip of wood chips or gravel between your lawn and any adjacent woods or brush. This is a recommendation endorsed by CDC and Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station research, based on studies showing it restricts tick migration from the humid woods edge into recreational turf. Be honest with yourself about the limit: this reduces ticks crossing into the lawn area but hasn't been independently shown to lower human or pet disease rates on its own — it's an abundance-reducer, not a disease guarantee.

    Note: A weekend-scale landscaping project, but one of the few habitat changes with a specific evidence-based origin.

    Move play and rest areas into the sun

    Position dog runs, kennels, patios, and play equipment away from the shaded woods edge and toward the open, sunny part of your property. Fewer blacklegged ticks are found on well-maintained sunny lawns away from brushy borders, so simply relocating where your pets spend time outdoors reduces their exposure without any additional landscaping work.

    Note: Often free — just a matter of where you choose to put things.

    Discourage rodent and deer hosts

    Stack firewood neatly in a dry location away from the house, remove brush piles and old furniture that shelter rodents, and consider fencing to help exclude deer from the property. White-footed mice and white-tailed deer are the key hosts that sustain a local tick population through its life cycle, so reducing their presence on your property lowers the tick supply over time, even though it works more slowly than direct habitat changes.

    Note: A longer-term investment — effects build over a season or more, not overnight.

    Consider a professional perimeter acaricide treatment

    A properly timed perimeter or leaf-litter treatment applied by a licensed applicator can substantially reduce the number of questing nymphs and adults on a property. Be aware of the honesty limit here: a large randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 2,727 households across three northeastern states found acaricide barrier sprays reduced questing-tick abundance by 63% but showed no measurable difference in tick bites or tick-borne disease between treated and untreated properties. Present this as a supplemental abundance-reducer that works alongside habitat and on-pet prevention — never as a standalone substitute for either.
