What diseases can fleas carry?

What Diseases Can Fleas Carry?

Fleas can transmit several serious diseases to both humans and animals. The most important illnesses they carry include plague, murine typhus, cat scratch disease, and tapeworm infection. Some of these diseases can cause severe sickness in people and pets if not recognized and treated promptly.

Plague (Yersinia pestis)

Plague is probably the most famous disease spread by fleas. The bacteria that cause plague, called Yersinia pestis, live in rodents like rats and mice. Fleas bite these infected animals and then bite humans, passing on the bacteria. Plague can show up in different forms, including bubonic (causing swollen lymph nodes), septicemic (infection in the blood), and pneumonic (affecting the lungs). Plague can be very dangerous if not treated quickly with antibiotics. Today, plague is rare but still exists in some rural areas around the world.

Murine Typhus

Murine typhus is caused by bacteria called Rickettsia typhi. Fleas that have fed on infected rats or mice can transmit this bacteria to people, usually through flea bites or when flea dirt (their droppings) gets into a scratch or cut on the skin. Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, and sometimes a rash. It's often mistaken for other illnesses but is usually not life-threatening if treated with proper antibiotics.

Cat Scratch Disease (Bartonella henselae)

Cat scratch disease happens when Bartonella henselae bacteria are spread, mostly by cat fleas among cats. While people typically get this disease from a scratch or bite from an infected cat (not directly from fleas), fleas play an essential role in spreading the bacteria between cats in the first place. People with cat scratch disease can develop swollen lymph nodes, fever, and fatigue.

Tapeworm Infection (Dipylidium caninum)

Fleas can carry the immature form of a tapeworm called Dipylidium caninum. If people, especially children, accidentally swallow an infected flea—sometimes by playing on the floor with animals—they can become infected with this tapeworm. In pets, it's much more common, especially in cats and dogs who groom themselves and might swallow fleas. Symptoms in people are usually mild but can involve stomach pain or anal itching.

Other Flea-related Health Risks

Besides specific diseases, flea bites can cause:

  • Severe itching and discomfort, especially in people allergic to flea saliva
  • Secondary skin infections from scratching bites
  • Anemia in pets if infestation is severe, due to blood loss from continual bites

Preventing Flea-Borne Diseases

You can lower your risk by:

  • Regularly treating pets for fleas with veterinarian-approved products
  • Washing pet bedding, vacuuming regularly, and cleaning your home to remove fleas and eggs
  • Wearing gloves when caring for pets with suspected flea problems
  • Teaching children not to touch or play with stray animals

Although the chance of catching a serious disease from fleas is low in many developed countries, it's still important to control fleas to protect yourself and your pets from irritation and possible illness. If you have ongoing problems with fleas or unexplained symptoms after flea bites, contact your doctor or veterinarian for advice.
