Snow is a surprisingly effective insulator. Once it builds up to around six to eight inches, the layer of air at ground level beneath it stabilizes close to freezing regardless of how cold it gets above the snow surface — a genuine, physically-explained microclimate that wildlife biologists have studied and named the subnivean zone. Michigan State University Extension describes small mammals building networks of tunnels through this space, moving between food caches and shelter all winter, sheltered from wind chill and hidden from aerial and ground predators that would otherwise spot them easily against white snow.
