Real IoT rodent-monitoring systems exist and truly work -- but for a different customer than the one they're marketed to here. The peer-reviewed RatSpy system, a machine-vision bait-station sensor published in the journal Sensors, frames its own benefit as "reducing manual labour, improving scalability," language that describes a pest company managing hundreds of bait stations across many properties, not a homeowner checking one house. That labor-saving value accrues to a company servicing a large commercial account, not to a single residence where a person can simply walk over and look. Where the real evidence for smart pest sensors actually comes from

It's worth being precise here, because the underlying technology is real -- it's the marketing to homeowners that doesn't hold up. The RatSpy system, described in a peer-reviewed paper in the journal Sensors, is a working machine-vision bait-station sensor. But the paper frames its own value proposition around "reducing manual labour, improving scalability" -- language written for a pest-management company managing large numbers of bait stations across many client properties, where checking each station by hand is truly expensive at scale.

That is a completely different economic situation from a single homeowner, who can walk into their own basement and look at a trap in under a minute. The labor-saving math that makes commercial IoT monitoring worthwhile simply doesn't apply to one house.
