Seal Every Gap and Opening

 

Rodents can get into your attic through very small holes—mice can squeeze through a gap as small as a dime, and rats can fit in holes the size of a quarter. Carefully check your whole house, especially the roof, eaves, vents, and anywhere pipes or wires enter the attic. Look outside and inside for gaps around:

• Roof joints and shingles
• Attic vents (gable, soffit, ridge vents)
• Fascia boards and eaves
• Chimneys and any flashing
• Pipes, conduits, or cables entering from outside
• Gaps around windows or skylights

Seal even tiny cracks or spaces using these materials:

• Steel wool: Stuff this tightly into smaller holes. Mice can’t chew through it.

• Caulking and expanding foam: Good for sealing cracks where air or light gets in, especially around windows or piping.
