When rats move indoors for warmth during winter, they leave behind several telltale signs. The most common evidence includes unusual noises (especially at night), droppings, gnawed materials, foul odors, and visible nests made of shredded materials. You might also notice greasy marks on walls, small holes, or changes in pet behavior. Recognizing these indicators early is vital to prevent a full-blown infestation and protect your home and health.
Rats are mostly nocturnal, meaning they’re active at night. You may hear scratching, scurrying, or squeaking sounds coming from behind walls, under the floor, in the attic, or even in kitchen cupboards after dark. If you hear movement mostly at night, this could be rats exploring, looking for food, or building nests.
Rat droppings are a clear indicator. They’re small, dark brown, and shaped like tiny capsules or grains of rice (about ½ inch long). You’ll typically find these in places where rats travel frequently, like along baseboards, near food storage, in pantries, cabinets, behind appliances, or in the attic.
Rats gnaw on almost anything to control their constantly growing teeth. You might find teeth marks on wooden beams, furniture, corners of cabinets, electrical wires, plastic pipes, cardboard boxes, or even food packaging. Holes chewed in bags of rice, pasta, or pet food are another red flag. In severe infestations, rats might even cause electrical shorts or water leaks by chewing wires and pipes.
Rats build their nests from soft, easily shredded materials. You may come across piles or clusters of torn-up insulation, shredded paper, fabric, cardboard, plastic wrappers, or dried plant matter tucked behind walls, in attic corners, garages, storage bins, or under appliances. Nests are typically hidden, but if you do find one, it’s a strong sign of an indoor infestation.
A strong, musty, ammonia-like smell is often associated with rat urine. This odor is usually strongest near nesting sites or along rat "highways" (paths they travel repeatedly). If an infestation is severe, the smell becomes hard to ignore and may linger in hidden areas, such as inside walls or behind large appliances. Occasionally, you may also notice a decaying odor if a rat dies in a hard-to-reach place.
Rats prefer to travel the same routes along walls and edges because it feels safer. As they squeeze and brush against surfaces, the oils and dirt from their fur leave dark, greasy smudges or rub marks on walls, pipes, floorboards, or baseboards. If you spot unexplained dirty or greasy marks in out-of-the-way places, this might indicate rat activity.
Keep an eye out for small holes or gaps, especially in walls, around doors, vent covers, or floors. A rat only needs a hole about the size of a quarter (roughly 3/4 inch) to squeeze through. Sometimes you’ll see fresh gnaw marks around these holes, which means rats are actively using them to get in and out.
If you have pets like cats or dogs, pay attention to their behavior. They might sniff or scratch intensely at walls, under appliances, or in corners where rats are present. Pets may also bark or growl at apparently empty spaces or act unusually restless at night when rats are most active.
In dusty or unused areas, such as basements or attics, look for small footprints or trails. Sometimes you’ll see the marks left by a rat’s tail sweeping behind them. To check for tracks, you can sprinkle a thin layer of flour or talcum powder on the floor overnight and look for trails the next morning.
Rats often tear into food packaging and drag bits of food to their hiding places. If you find scattered grains, seeds, or chewed food in unusual spots, or shredded wrappers, this can mean rats are helping themselves to your stored supplies.
If you notice a combination of these signs—especially droppings, noises at night, gnawed materials, and nesting evidence—there’s a strong chance that rats are nesting indoors. It’s important to act quickly: block entry points, store food securely, clean up nests and droppings with protective gloves and masks (to avoid disease), and seek professional pest control if the problem is serious. Remember, rats breed quickly and winter indoors provides them safe, warm places to multiply, so fast action will help protect your home and family’s health.
