Why does my pet have a small bump or scab where a tick was attached?

These typically resolve on their own over days to a few weeks without any treatment. How do I tell a normal healing bump from something that needs a vet visit?

Warning signs that a lump is not a simple granuloma include enlargement over time, discharge or pus (suggesting an abscess or infection), noticeable pain or heat when touched, or your pet developing systemic signs like fever, lethargy, or lameness alongside the lump. A practical way to monitor at home is to photograph the lump next to a coin or ruler every few days so you can objectively track whether it's shrinking, staying the same, or growing, rather than relying on memory alone. A lump that is growing, oozing, or simply not healing after a few weeks — or any lump paired with signs elsewhere in the body — warrants a veterinary evaluation.

Is a scab at a tick bite site the same thing as a granuloma?

They're related but not identical — a scab is typically the surface healing response over the puncture wound itself, while a granuloma is the firmer bump of inflammatory tissue that can form underneath, especially if a small mouthpart fragment stayed behind. Both are generally normal parts of healing and resolve without treatment in most cases. The same monitoring approach applies to either: watch for growth, pus, pain, heat, or the pet becoming unwell in other ways. If the area is simply healing as expected — smaller over time, not painful, no discharge — there's no need for a vet visit purely for the scab or bump itself.
