Can Fleas Live in Hardwood Floors?

Yes, fleas can live in hardwood floors, but not in the way you might imagine. While fleas prefer environments like carpets or pet bedding—places with lots of fibers to hide in—they are absolutely able to survive in homes with hardwood floors. Fleas don’t actually 'live' inside wood, but they use cracks, gaps, and crevices in the flooring and baseboards as hiding spots and places to lay eggs.

Fleas go through four stages in their life: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Only the adult fleas live on animals, like dogs or cats, and bite for blood. The other stages—eggs, larvae, and pupae—can be found off your pet, wherever your pet rests or spends a lot of time. On hardwood floors, the gaps between floorboards and in the space under baseboards are perfect places for flea eggs to drop and for immature fleas to develop. Even if you can easily see and clean hardwood, these small hiding spots are still vulnerable to flea infestation.

Flea eggs are tiny and white—almost impossible to spot. They’re laid by adult fleas on your pet, but they fall off easily wherever your pet walks or sleeps. After a few days, the eggs hatch into larvae, which avoid the light by crawling deep into cracks, crevices, and dust. These larvae feed on organic debris like skin flakes and 'flea dirt' (which is flea poop that contains digested blood). Here on the floor, especially in hidden places, they’re safe from vacuuming or sweeping. Later, flea larvae spin cocoons and enter the pupal stage, which can stay dormant and hidden for weeks or even months until they sense a pet—or human—passing by.

If you have hardwood floors and notice fleas, it’s important to know that simply sweeping isn’t enough. The eggs, larvae, and pupae in cracks are rarely removed with regular cleaning. To get rid of fleas in hardwood floors:

• Vacuum thoroughly, especially along cracks, under furniture, and along the room’s edges. The suction can remove fleas at nearly every stage, but empty the vacuum bag or canister outside the house right away to prevent re-infestation.
• Use a steam cleaner if possible, as the heat will kill both fleas and their eggs.
• Wash your pet’s bedding and any soft items (rugs, blankets) in hot water regularly.
• Treat your pets with appropriate flea medication, as advised by your veterinarian.
• Consider using a safe household flea spray or powder directed at cracks, corners, and baseboards where fleas may hide. Always read and follow product directions, and ensure pets and children are safe during and after treatment.
• Repeat cleaning and treatments regularly over several weeks, since dormant pupae can hatch after your first round of cleaning and re-start the cycle.
• Seal cracks or gaps in floorboards and along baseboards to limit future hiding places for fleas.
