Boevé et al. (2014) independently screened 66 samples against a different wasp population and again found consistent repellency from wintergreen, marjoram, and mint-derived compounds. Both are legitimate, peer-reviewed findings — the compounds genuinely work as concentrated spatial repellents.

Where the claim overreaches

Neither study tested living plants growing in soil — both used concentrated oils applied at a controlled dose. An intact plant simply doesn't emit its volatile compounds at anywhere near that concentration into open air, so there's no controlled evidence that planting marigolds, citronella, or mint around a yard measurably reduces wasp activity. The popular plant lists circulating online trace to garden and pest-company content, not to any study that actually tested planted specimens against wasp presence.
