Do Lady Beetles Bite or Cause Reactions?

Lady beetles, often called ladybugs, are small, colorful beetles that most people recognize for their helpful role in gardens, where they eat pests like aphids. Generally, lady beetles do not aggressively bite people or animals. However, on rare occasions, certain species can pinch or "bite" if they land on your skin and mistake you for a food source, or if they feel threatened. Their tiny mouthparts aren’t designed to pierce human skin deeply, so these bites are usually very mild and barely noticeable. Most people describe the feeling as a small pinch or a tickle, and it almost never causes any severe pain.

Some people, though, can have a mild skin reaction where the beetle makes contact or bites. This is usually a small, red bump that may itch slightly, similar to a mosquito bite but generally much less irritating. The reaction is not caused by venom—lady beetles don’t inject any toxic substance—but simply from your body's response to their mouthparts or to small traces of fluids from the beetle.

There is another possible reaction called "contact dermatitis." This can happen if you handle many lady beetles, especially the Asian lady beetle species, which sometimes swarm indoors during certain seasons. Their legs and bodies secrete a yellowish fluid called “reflex blood,” which has a strong odor and can stain surfaces. This fluid helps protect them from predators, but it can also cause skin irritation in some sensitive individuals. Again, most people won’t notice any problem, but a few can get redness, itching, or swelling where the fluid touched their skin.

It's extremely rare for lady beetles to cause any serious allergic reactions. People with strong allergies to insects might experience more noticeable symptoms, but this is not common. Most encounters with lady beetles, even if they bite or secrete fluid, require nothing more than washing the area with soap and water. If discomfort persists, an over-the-counter anti-itch or hydrocortisone cream can help.
