Boxelder bugs are fairly easy to spot once you know what to look for. They are small, oval-shaped insects usually about half an inch long. The main characteristics that set them apart from other bugs are their black bodies with bright orange or red markings, particularly along their thorax (the middle part of their back) and edges of their wings. When you find them inside, it’s typically in large numbers, especially near windows, doors, or sunny areas, since they are attracted to warmth and light.

 

Specific Physical Traits to Look For

 

• Color: Boxelder bugs are primarily black but have distinct orange or red lines along the edges of their wings and pronotum (area right behind the head).
• Size: Adults are about ½ inch long and are somewhat flat with an elongated, oval body.
• Shape: Their wings cross over flat on their backs, creating an “X” pattern of red or orange over the black.
• Legs and Antennae: Both are black, making the red or orange markings stand out more clearly.
