When it is pointless

This threshold only matters before entry. Once stink bugs are already inside a wall void, no amount of precision sealing reaches them — EPA, University of Maryland, and NPIC guidance is consistent that interior spraying at that point is not effective and not recommended, and dead bugs left in a void can feed carpet beetles and other dermestid pests.

That's about as close to a hard physical limit as pest exclusion research gets.

Why the size threshold exists at all

The explanation is straightforward anatomy. The researchers measured stink bug body dimensions directly: female pronota (the hard plate behind the head) averaged 8.33 millimeters wide, compared to 7.47 millimeters for males, and body heights ran 4.03 millimeters for females versus 3.50 for males. A round hole has to be at least as wide as the pronotum for the bug to squeeze through; a flat slit has to be at least as tall as the body height.
