The one intervention with real evidence behind it — and the honest limit on when it is worth doing.
This threshold only matters before entry. Once stink bugs are already inside a wall void, no amount of precision sealing reaches them — EPA, University of Maryland, and NPIC guidance is consistent that interior spraying at that point is not effective and not recommended, and dead bugs left in a void can feed carpet beetles and other dermestid pests.
Measuring a gap against a known reference — a dime is about 1.8 mm thick, three stacked pennies run close to 5 mm — and running a bead of caulk is a homeowner task with no special tools required. The one caveat from the original research: these thresholds assume a rigid material. Flexible or warped trim, screen, or weatherstrip may still admit bugs through a gap that measures smaller than 3mm or 7mm when the material isn't holding a fixed shape.
The full picture
The study behind the number
Most pest-control advice about gap sizes is a rounded rule of thumb. This one is different: it comes from a controlled 2019 study published in the Journal of Economic Entomology, where researchers (Chambers, Kuhar, Reichard, Leskey, and Pearce, working out of Virginia Tech) built test openings of precise, known sizes and measured how many adult brown marmorated stink bugs actually passed through each one.
The result was sharper than a vague 'seal small gaps' recommendation. Holes of 8 millimeters and slits of 4 millimeters let a meaningful number of stink bugs through. Drop to a 7-millimeter hole or a 3-millimeter slit, and passage nearly vanishes — the study's lead author noted that only one male stink bug, out of the trial, made it through a 7mm hole, and none made it through a 3mm slit. That's about as close to a hard physical limit as pest exclusion research gets.
Why the size threshold exists at all
The explanation is straightforward anatomy. The researchers measured stink bug body dimensions directly: female pronota (the hard plate behind the head) averaged 8.33 millimeters wide, compared to 7.47 millimeters for males, and body heights ran 4.03 millimeters for females versus 3.50 for males. A round hole has to be at least as wide as the pronotum for the bug to squeeze through; a flat slit has to be at least as tall as the body height. Below those measurements, the body simply doesn't fit — no amount of insect determination changes the physics.
This also explains why the smallest seals matter most: because females are slightly larger than males, a gap sized just above 3mm/7mm might still exclude females while admitting some males. Sealing to the full 3mm/7mm standard — not a looser approximation — is what excludes both sexes reliably.
Turning millimeters into a caulk gun
In practice, extension sources round this precise research finding into a simpler field number: seal anything around 1/16 to 1/8 inch or larger. You don't need calipers to apply it — a dime is roughly 1.8 millimeters thick, and three stacked pennies run close to 5 millimeters, which gives a rough visual reference for what a 3-to-7-millimeter gap looks like in daylight. If you can see a gap that size or slide a thin card into it, it's worth a bead of silicone or silicone-latex caulk.
One important caveat from the original research: this threshold assumes a rigid opening. A gap in stiff trim or masonry behaves predictably at these sizes; a gap bordered by flexible screen, warped wood, or compressed weatherstrip may not, since the material can flex and briefly open wider than its resting measurement. Once bugs are in a wall void, the gap-size threshold that kept them out is irrelevant to getting them out; extension and EPA guidance both note that interior insecticide use at that point is not effective and not recommended, since the bugs are dormant and physically unreachable, and dead ones left in the void become food for carpet beetles.
