Woodpeckers peck, or drum, on houses for several main reasons: to find food, to make nests, to communicate, and sometimes by mistake. While woodpeckers usually live in forests and prefer trees, they are smart and adaptable birds. If houses look or sound similar to trees, or if they find what they need there, woodpeckers may start pecking on your house.
Woodpeckers eat insects, especially wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, and larvae that live under tree bark. Sometimes, siding made of natural wood or even synthetic materials (like cedar shake, plywood, or softwood boards) attracts insects, which in turn attracts woodpeckers. The birds peck holes or strips off your siding to reach these insects. Even if there aren’t insects present, woodpeckers may mistakenly think there are, especially if they hear insect sounds inside the wall or see cracks where bugs get in.
Woodpeckers carve holes in trees to make nests—these are called cavities. In some cases, when woodpeckers cannot find a suitable dead or soft tree, they might choose your house’s siding or trim, especially if it’s made of soft, untreated, or old wood. Once a bird starts making a nest hole, it may return to the same spot year after year, or other birds may take over the location. These holes are much larger than feeding holes and often go deep into the wood.
Woodpeckers also peck quickly and repeatedly on resonant, hollow, or metal surfaces (such as gutters, chimney caps, or wood siding) simply to make noise. This is called drumming. Drumming is the woodpecker’s way of marking its territory and attracting mates—it does not involve looking for food or making a nest. Spring is the peak time for drumming, as males are looking for a mate and warning other birds to stay away. Houses often have materials that make louder sounds than tree bark, so the birds may prefer these for their drumming “concerts.”
Sometimes, a woodpecker will peck a house out of curiosity, by accident, or while exploring new territory. Soft or decaying wood can resemble natural trees, and shiny surfaces or unfamiliar noises may invite investigation.
While woodpeckers are protected by law and cannot be harmed, their pecking causes problems for homeowners. These include:
