How Carpenter Bees Cause Damage

 

Carpenter bees are large, black-and-yellow bees that look a lot like bumblebees, but unlike bumblebees, they don’t live in hives. Instead, female carpenter bees bore perfectly round holes—about the diameter of your pinky finger—into exposed, untreated, or weathered wood. They use their jaws to chew into wood, creating a short tunnel straight in (about an inch), then turn and tunnel along the grain for several more inches. In these tunnels, they lay eggs and store food for their young.

Painted or sealed wood is less attractive to carpenter bees, as the surface barrier makes it harder for them to begin tunneling. Pressure-treated lumber is less likely to be attacked, but not immune if it’s old or the surface is cracked.
