What actually brought it

Any accessible food source, since crazy ants are opportunistic omnivores that will feed on sweets, proteins, other insects, and the honeydew produced by aphids and scale insects, combined with a nest site in moist soil, mulch, potted plants, wall voids, or under debris that retains water.

Nothing about a crazy ant is special. It wants food and a damp place to nest — its trail just doesn't run in a straight line.

Why food and moisture explain the whole story

Crazy ants get their name from the fast, erratic, seemingly directionless way they run rather than following a single scent trail the way many other ants do, but the underlying biology is ordinary: they're opportunistic feeders that will eat nearly anything, including honeydew from aphids and scale insects, and they nest under almost any object that retains moisture — mulch, potted plants, debris, damp soil. When a nest site floods after rain or heavy watering, large numbers often move indoors at once looking for a drier spot, which is frequently when people notice them for the first time. Food availability and consistent dampness are the entire explanation.
