The specific number attached to rats and house fires traces to a single, confirmable source: an October 2012 pest-industry trade-magazine article. That article introduced the figure with the hedge "it's estimated" and supplied no citation, no methodology, and no dataset. It sat next to a separate, legitimate NFPA electrical-fire statistic in the same paragraph — almost certainly why the two got merged in the retellings that followed for the next decade.

No fire authority has ever independently verified or reproduced that number. Fire departments code the cause of a fire using NFIRS, the National Fire Incident Reporting System, and NFIRS has no rat, rodent, or animal-specific ignition-cause code at all. There is nothing in the coding system that could even produce a rat-attributable percentage of undetermined-cause fires, because "undetermined" fires by definition carry no assigned cause. The statistic was never measured; it was asserted once, uncritically, and then repeated.
