What actually happens when a nest blocks a flue
The mechanism behind this concern is real: a flue exists to carry smoke and combustion gases safely out of the house, and anything substantial enough to restrict that path — nesting material, general debris, a partially collapsed liner — can force draft to fail. When draft fails badly enough, smoke or carbon monoxide can back up into the living space instead of venting outside, which is a genuine health and safety hazard, most likely to show up the first time a fire is lit each season after a summer of accumulation. Separately, dry nesting material sitting in the flue is combustible, and sparks or embers reaching it during a fire can ignite it directly. Both of these are documented, real mechanisms — the honest correction is about scale and species, not about whether the underlying hazard exists.
