While pavement ants do not chew through concrete, bricks, or stone, their tunneling activity beneath the surface can undermine the substrate (the underlying layer of soil or sand). Over long periods, a large colony can remove enough material to contribute to minor settling or create small voids. In some cases, this may cause very slight unevenness, gaps, or wobbly pavers, especially if the driveway or patio is already aging, poorly constructed, or has existing cracks that allow water and fine materials to wash away more easily.

However, pavement ants are not nearly as destructive as carpenter ants or termites. Their primary impact is the creation of visible dirt or sand piles, which can be a nuisance and may be unsightly.
