Pests are especially attracted to moisture-damaged wood because it is easier for them to chew, burrow into, and digest compared to dry, healthy wood. Moisture in wood weakens its structure, softens cellulose (the main part wood is made from), and often causes fungi and mold to grow—creating an ideal habitat and food source for many pests. How Moisture Changes Wood

• Carpenter Ants: These ants don’t eat wood, but they love to tunnel into soft, damp wood to build their nests.
• Wood-boring Beetles: These insects lay their eggs in rotten wood, where their larvae hatch and feed on the wet fibers.
