Should You Burn or Compost Diseased Leaves?

 

If you have leaves from plants that are visibly diseased — meaning they show signs of fungus, bacteria, or viruses, like spots, mildew, unusual colors, or other damage — you should NOT compost them in your regular home compost pile. If You Must Compost Diseased Leaves

 

If burning or hauling away isn’t possible, and you want to compost diseased leaves, take these extra steps:

• Try to use a hot composting method with a big pile (at least 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall).
• Monitor the internal temperature with a compost thermometer. It should reach and stay above 140°F (60°C) for 3 or more consecutive days.
• Turn the pile thoroughly to make sure all material spends time in the center, where it's hottest.
• Let the compost age for at least a year before using it on your garden, and avoid using it around plants especially sensitive to disease.

This method is less reliable than burning or sending diseased leaves off-site, but it can reduce risk if done properly.

 

How to Identify Diseased Leaves

 

To be safe, avoid composting leaves showing:

• Powdery substances (powdery mildew).
• Dark, irregular spots (common with fungal or bacterial leaf spots).
• Unusual yellowing or mosaic patterns.
• White, brown, gray, or black molds.
• Leaves with oozing fluids or with a rotten smell.

When in doubt, it’s safest not to compost those leaves.
