How Rats Actually React to Peppermint Oil

Rats do have a sensitive sense of smell and may initially avoid new and strong odor sources. However, research and pest control professionals have found that:

• Rats quickly get used to the smell, especially if food or nesting is nearby
• Peppermint oil evaporates fast — its effectiveness almost disappears after a few hours or days unless constantly reapplied
• Rats will ignore the scent if they have a reason to enter, such as easy access to food or warmth
• There is little to no scientific evidence showing that peppermint oil truly repels rats in real situations

Common Natural Repellents and Their Limits
