Most Common Signs of a Rat Infestation

If you suspect a rat problem, look for these clear warning signs. Catching these early is key to stopping rats from causing bigger issues, like property damage or health risks:

• Droppings: Rats leave small, dark, pellet-shaped droppings wherever they are active. The droppings are usually found along walls, in cupboards, under sinks, behind appliances, or where food is stored. Fresh droppings are moist and shiny; old ones are dry and crumbly.
• Gnaw Marks: Rats constantly gnaw to keep their teeth short. You may find fresh bite marks or chewed edges on food packages, wires, pipes, wood, or plastic. These gnaw marks may be about the size of a grain of rice and can be light (if recent) or darker (if older).
• Unusual Noises: Listen for scratching, scurrying, or squeaking sounds from walls, ceilings, attics, or under floors—especially at night, when rats are most active.
• Grease Marks: As rats travel along the same routes, their oily fur leaves greasy smudges or dark rub marks on walls, floors, baseboards, or around entry holes.
• Burrows and Holes: Look for small holes or tunnels outside near foundations, in gardens, under sheds, or around garbage areas. Indoors, rats may make holes in walls or floors to get into hidden spaces.
• Nests: Rats build nests using soft materials such as shredded paper, fabric, insulation, or dried plant matter. These nests are usually hidden in warm, quiet places like behind appliances, inside wall cavities, or in attics.
• Footprints and Tail Marks: In dusty or muddy areas, you might see little footprints and long tail marks where rats have run. Sprinkling a fine layer of flour or talcum powder overnight in an area can help reveal their paths.
• Urine Odor: Rats mark territories with urine. Large infestations tend to create a strong, musky smell, especially in poorly ventilated areas.
• Damaged Food and Packaging: Check for torn, chewed, or gnawed packaging and small holes in food containers or bags—rats are always searching for food.
• Pet Behavior: Dogs and cats may become unusually alert, bark, paw, or scratch at walls, under appliances, or near small openings if they sense rats. They might also pick up lingering smells that aren’t obvious to humans.

• Kitchen and Pantry: Look behind and under appliances, inside drawers and cupboards, and in the corners for droppings or gnaw marks.
• Attics, Basements, and Crawl Spaces: Search hidden and dark spaces for nests, droppings, and gnawing damage to wood, insulation, or wiring.
• Garage and Storage Areas: Check for chewed boxes, damaged items, and evidence of nesting in cluttered areas.
• Exterior of the Home: Inspect foundations, vents, doors, and roof eaves for holes or gaps bigger than half an inch—rats can squeeze through very small openings.
