Rats typically build their nests in quiet, hidden spots close to food and water sources and areas where they feel safe from humans and predators. Around homes, the most common nest locations are inside walls, attics, basements, crawl spaces, garages, and sheds. Outdoors, rats nest in overgrown gardens, under decks, in wood piles, piles of debris, burrows along building foundations, compost heaps, and even under concrete slabs. Their main goals are warmth, easy access to food and water, hidden entry or exit routes, and protection from larger animals.

 

Common Indoor Nesting Sites

 

• Inside Walls: Rats love wall cavities because they are insulated, dark, and difficult for humans to access. They enter through tiny cracks or holes in the exterior walls and can chew through plaster, wood, or even soft concrete to create or widen entry points.
• Attics and Roof Spaces: These areas are quiet, usually undisturbed, and warm. Rats often get into attics by climbing trees, vines, gutters, or siding, then squeezing in through gaps in the roof or eaves.
• Basements and Crawl Spaces: Especially if cluttered or moist, these spots give rats easy cover. Look for signs like gnawed holes, droppings, or greasy rub marks along pipes and walls.
• Garages and Sheds: Often used for storage, these are favorite rat spots, especially if food items or pet food are left there. Cardboard, paper, and fabric stored in these spaces can be used for nesting material.
• Kitchens, Pantries, and Laundry Rooms: Rats sometimes nest close to food and water sources, such as under appliances like fridges, ovens, or washing machines. They can use the backside of cabinets or hidden voids behind plumbing as shelter.

 

Typical Outdoor Nesting Spots

 

• Burrows Along Foundations: Rats dig tunnels and create nests right next to the outer walls of houses, taking advantage of cracks or gaps to access the inside of your home.
• Under Decks and Patios: These provide shelter and are often overlooked. The darkness and limited access protect the rats from weather and predators.
• Wood Piles, Debris, and Compost Heaps: Any stacked lumber, firewood, garden waste, or unmanaged compost is perfect for tunnel nests and hiding spots.
• Overgrown Shrubs and Dense Vegetation: Areas with thick ground cover provide cover and materials for nests. Rats collect leaves, grass, and sticks to build their homes underneath.
• Under Sheds or Outbuildings: Elevated structures or those with open bottoms are particularly vulnerable to rat nests beneath their floors.

 

How Rats Build Their Nests

 

Rats use whatever soft material they can find—like shredded paper, insulation, fabric, leaves, or even plastic—for bedding. Indoors, they might tear up insulation from walls or attics, or use bits of cardboard and fabric from storage boxes. Outdoors, they dig tunnels and line their burrows with leaves, grass, and any found debris. Their nests are usually well-hidden, about the size of a grapefruit, and can house a whole family group.

 

Signs of Nesting Activity

 

• Small, dark droppings scattered near nest sites or along rat runways (their regular paths).
• Gnawed holes in walls, floors, or around vents and pipes.
• Greasy smear marks (from rat fur) on walls and baseboards.
• Nest material such as shredded paper, insulation, fabric, or grass bundled in hidden corners.
• Scratching or scurrying sounds, especially at night when rats are most active.

 

How to Prevent Rats from Nesting Near Your Home

 

• Seal Gaps and Cracks: Block holes in walls, siding, roofs, and around pipes bigger than a quarter-inch using steel wool, metal flashing, or cement.
• Reduce Clutter: Keep storage spaces tidy and minimize piles of boxes, clothes, or paper products inside and debris outside.
• Store Food Securely: Use sealed containers for pet food and human food. Don’t leave food out in garages, sheds, or on counters.
• Maintain Your Yard: Keep grass short, trim back shrubs, and remove garden waste quickly. Stack firewood away from the house, at least 18 inches above the ground and several feet from walls.
• Fix Leaks and Remove Water Sources: Dry up any persistent standing water indoors or out, and fix leaky faucets or pipes that might attract rats for hydration.
