Can moths destroy clothes or carpets?

Can Moths Destroy Clothes or Carpets?

Yes, certain types of moths can absolutely destroy clothes, carpets, and other household fabrics. The main culprits are the larvae (caterpillar stage) of clothes moths, not the adult moths you'll sometimes see flying around. These larvae feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, cashmere, fur, feathers, and even hair. If these larvae find their way into your home and are left unchecked, they can cause extensive and costly damage by eating holes in your beloved clothes, rugs, and fabric items.

Which Moths Are Responsible for the Damage?

It’s not just any moth that eats fabrics. The ones you need to worry about are called clothes moths and carpet moths. The two most common species are:

  • Webbing clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella): Very small and pale gold, these moths lay eggs on clothes and soft furnishings. When the eggs hatch, the larvae feed on keratin, a protein in natural animal fibers.
  • Case-bearing clothes moth (Tinea pellionella): Slightly darker and they make a protective 'case' around themselves out of fibers, dragging it along as shelter while they eat.

These moths generally avoid light, preferring dark and undisturbed places such as the back of closets, under furniture, along baseboards, or in storage boxes.

How Do Moth Larvae Actually Destroy Fabrics?

Only the larvae, not adult moths, eat fabric. Adult moths lay tiny eggs directly onto clothes, carpets, or upholstery. Once hatched, the larvae start feeding on natural fibers. Natural fibers like wool and silk contain a protein called keratin, which moth larvae digest easily.

The damage appears as irregular holes, thinning of the fabric, shed fibers, or web-like tunnels. They often prefer soiled or sweaty clothing because it's easier to digest and provides added nutrients.

Which Items in Your Home Are Most at Risk?

  • Wool clothing – sweaters, coats, hats, scarves, and suits
  • Wool and silk carpets or rugs
  • Upholstered furniture with natural fiber fabric
  • Stored blankets or bedding made from animal fibers
  • Animal furs, taxidermy, or feathers
  • Felt used in musical instruments or crafts

Synthetics and pure cotton are usually safe, unless they’re blended with natural fibers.

Warning Signs of a Moth Infestation

  • Finding small, irregular holes in your clothing or carpets
  • Clothes or fabric that appear “thinned” or have loose fibers
  • Presence of silky webbing or clumps that look like sticky lint
  • Small, white caterpillars or larvae on or near affected items
  • Empty, papery cases left behind after the larvae turn into adult moths
  • Live adult moths—though these are often found near sources of food, seeing several moths flying in the home can signal a problem

How Can You Prevent Clothes or Carpet Moth Damage?

  • Keep storage areas clean and dry. Regularly vacuum closets, under furniture, along baseboards, and inside drawers.
  • Store off-season clothes properly. Seal them in airtight bags or containers, and make sure everything is clean before storage—launder or dry-clean items to remove sweat and oils.
  • Use moth deterrents. Cedar blocks, lavender sachets, or commercial moth repellents help discourage moths, but don’t rely solely on them. They are repellents, not killers.
  • Frequently air out and shake rugs, blankets, and rarely worn clothing. Moths prefer undisturbed places.
  • Vacuum and clean carpets regularly, especially in hidden areas.

What Can You Do If You Already Have a Moth Problem?

  • Isolate and clean all affected items. Wash clothes at the hottest safe temperature and dry-clean delicate fabrics. Heat and deep freezing (at least -18°C or 0°F for several days) also kill eggs and larvae.
  • Vacuum thoroughly. Clean the entire room, especially cracks, edges, under furniture, and inside closets. Immediately dispose of the vacuum bag afterwards.
  • Use insecticidal sprays or professional pest control for severe cases.
  • Inspect and treat nearby fabrics, as infestations spread quickly.

Summary

Clothes and carpet moth larvae absolutely can and do destroy clothes, carpets, and other natural-fiber items in your home. Their damage happens slowly and often goes unnoticed until it is severe. Prevention is far easier (and cheaper) than repair—regular cleaning, correct storage, and quick action at the first sign of damage are your best defenses.
