Do Ants Cause Structural Damage or Just Nuisance?

Most ants seen inside homes or buildings are considered nuisance pests—they do not directly damage the structure itself. These common ants, like odorous house ants, pavement ants, or little black ants, are searching for food or water, and while their presence is bothersome, they won’t harm the building. Their nests typically remain outside or within minor wall voids, and they don’t eat or destroy building materials.

However, certain ant species can inflict real structural damage. The primary culprit is the carpenter ant. Unlike termites, which eat wood for food, carpenter ants excavate wood to create their nests. They carve out tunnels and galleries inside the wood but don’t actually eat it. Over time, carpenter ants can hollow out wooden beams, wall studs, or window and door frames. This can weaken the structural integrity of your home, leading to costly repairs if left unchecked.

Another rare but possible risk comes from moisture ants. These ants are drawn to extremely damp, decayed wood, and their nesting often indicates that there is already a moisture problem and some decay. While the ants themselves don’t directly weaken sound wood, their presence suggests a bigger underlying issue with rotten wood that could affect your structure.

Signs of Structural-Damaging Ants

• Sawdust-like material (frass) below holes in wooden beams, baseboards, or window frames—a sign of carpenter ants digging.
• Hollow or soft-sounding wood when tapped, or crumbling window sills/frames.
• Large, black ants seen trailing indoors, especially in spring or summer, could be carpenter ants.
• Rustling noises inside walls caused by ants moving around in their tunnels.
• Sightings of winged ants (called swarmers) inside the house, especially in spring.

If you’re only finding tiny, brown, or black ants trailing into your kitchen or bathroom, these are virtually always nuisance ants and don’t threaten your home’s structure. But, repeated sightings of larger ants, especially paired with wood damage, should be addressed immediately by a pest professional.

How to Prevent Structural Ant Damage

• Seal up cracks, gaps, and entry points around the foundation, windows, and doors.
• Fix any leaks and address moisture issues, since carpenter ants are drawn to damp wood.
• Keep trees and shrubs trimmed away from your house so ants can’t easily move from branches to your home.
• Store firewood away from the house and elevate it off the ground.
• Regularly inspect your home for signs of wood damage, especially in basements, attics, and around windows.
• If you suspect a carpenter ant infestation, contact a pest control specialist promptly.
