How to Tell if Leaf Damage Is Caused by Pests or Disease

 

When you see leaf damage on a plant, the fastest way to tell the difference between pest damage and disease is to look closely at the pattern and type of damage. Pest damage usually looks like holes, chewed edges, or missing parts of the leaf, and you might see bugs or signs of their presence. Disease damage often appears as spots, patches of discoloration, wilting, or mold, and does not look like something has been eaten away.

 

Pest Damage: What It Looks Like

 

• Chewed or ragged edges: Pieces of leaf missing along the outer edge are usually a sign of caterpillars, beetles, or snails/slugs.
• Holes in the middle of a leaf: Irregular or round holes with green, healthy tissue nearby often mean insects, such as beetles or caterpillars, are feeding on your plant.
• Skeletonized leaves: Only the leaf veins remain, with all the soft green tissue eaten away. This is common with beetles or some caterpillars.
• Silken webbing or tunnels: Fine webbing can mean spider mites. Tunnels or trails inside the leaf (visible as winding lines) are usually from leaf miners—tiny larvae living inside the leaf.
• Sticky residue, specks, or frass: “Frass” is the tiny black or green droppings left by insects. Sticky areas may be from aphids or scale insects secreting “honeydew.”
• Presence of live bugs: Sometimes you might see the offending insect right on the leaves—look under the leaves or at new growth.

 

Disease Damage: What It Looks Like

 

• Spots or blotches: Brown, black, yellow, or tan spots that may have a border (sometimes with a yellow halo), caused by fungi or bacteria. These are called “leaf spots.”
• Discoloration or patches: Uneven coloring—such as yellowing leaves with green veins (“chlorosis”)—often points to diseases or nutrient problems, not to pests.
• Powdery, fuzzy, or slimy coating: White powder (powdery mildew), gray fuzz (grey mold), or black soot (sooty mold) are all signs of fungal disease.
• Water-soaked or greasy spots: Wet-looking spots or “oily” patches can be signs of bacterial diseases.
• Wilting, twisting, or curling: If leaves wilt or curl up without an obvious bug chewing on them, a virus or root fungal disease may be the cause.
• No missing tissue: Disease damage usually doesn’t remove pieces of the leaf. Instead, changes happen within the tissue itself (discoloration, rotting, wilting, or growths).

 

How to Check More Closely

 

• Use a magnifying glass to see small pests like spider mites or thrips. Look on both sides of the leaf. For diseases, look for spots spreading quickly, odd colors, or fuzzy growths.
• Examine the pattern: Chewing pests usually affect the leaf’s edges or make large irregular holes, while most diseases appear as spots or patches scattered anywhere on the leaf.
• Consider the speed: Insect damage often appears quickly. Diseases may take days or weeks to spread, sometimes affecting many leaves in similar ways.
• Check for pest evidence: Tiny eggs, webbing, frass, or actual insects mean pests. No bugs, but spreading spots, often points to disease.

 

Other Things to Consider

 

• If you find both signs, pests can sometimes carry or create wounds that let diseases enter, so both can be present.
• Healthy-looking holes or eaten edges = likely pest. Discolored areas, wilting, or moldy patches without missing leaf material = likely disease.
• Weather matters: Wet, humid weather favors diseases. Dry weather with visible bugs is more likely pest issues.

 

What to Do Next

 

• If you suspect pests, look under leaves, on stems, and at night (some pest insects come out in the dark). Pick off larger pests by hand or wash off small ones with water or insecticidal soap.
• If you suspect disease, remove affected leaves and avoid getting foliage wet. Improve airflow around plants. If needed, use fungicide or bactericide products as directed.
