Flesh flies (Sarcophagidae) are large dull-gray flies with three dark thoracic stripes, a distinctive checkerboard (tessellated) gray-and-black abdomen, and red eyes. They breed in carrion; indoors, their appearance almost always signals a dead animal in a wall, attic, or crawlspace. Uniquely, females deposit live larvae directly on the source rather than eggs — meaning maggots may already be developing when you first see the adults.

Big gray checkerboard fly indoors? Look for a dead animal.
Flesh flies (family Sarcophagidae) are the gray, non-metallic members of the carrion-fly group — and they carry the same detective meaning as blow flies when found indoors. Iowa State Extension is direct: flesh flies appearing inside a home 'typically indicates that an animal… has died within the walls or in the attic.' They do not breed in garbage, drains, or houseplant soil. Carrion is their medium.
Two features make flesh flies unmistakable once you know what to look for. First, the checkerboard (tessellated) gray-and-black abdomen — a distinctive pattern of alternating dark and light squares visible in good light. Second, the stripe count: flesh flies have three dark thoracic stripes; house flies have four. These two tells together separate flesh flies from every other common NH fly.
The most unusual thing about flesh flies is their reproduction: females skip the egg stage entirely and deposit live larvae directly on the carrion source. This is called larviparity. So by the time you see adults indoors, there is a good chance maggots are already actively developing on a hidden carcass somewhere in the structure. Source-first applies completely: find and remove the dead animal, disinfect the site, and the flies stop.
How to identify a flesh fly
Three features separate flesh flies from everything else: the checkerboard abdomen, the three (not four) thoracic stripes, and the dull gray non-metallic body. Memorize these and you will never confuse a flesh fly with a house fly or a blow fly again.

Common house fly
How to tell — House fly is smaller (~1/4 inch), has four thoracic stripes (not three), and has no checkerboard abdomen — just a yellowish-gray abdomen with dark markings. House flies breed in garbage and manure, not primarily in carrion. The stripe count (three vs four) is the quickest separator.
Blow fly / bottle fly
How to tell — Blow and bottle flies have a brilliant metallic blue/green/bronze sheen. Flesh flies are dull gray with no metallic coloration. Same carcass-breeding logic applies to both, but the visual difference is stark.
Stable fly
How to tell — Stable flies are house-fly-sized (~1/4 inch), have a forward-projecting bayonet proboscis, and bite. Flesh flies are larger, don't bite, and have the checkerboard abdomen. No overlap in the field.
Signs of a problem
Flesh flies indoors follow the same detective logic as blow flies — their presence is a sign, not just an annoyance. Here is what to look for and what each observation means.
Large gray checkerboard-abdomen flies appearing indoors
What it means — A dead animal is almost certainly present inside the structure. Iowa State Extension identifies this as the typical indoor meaning of flesh fly appearance.
Flies or maggots near a wall void, floor cavity, or crawlspace
What it means — The carcass is at or very near that location — begin the search there.
Sudden appearance in summer near a garbage can or outdoor area
What it means — A nearby outdoor carcass or garbage source is the likely origin — less alarming than an indoor appearance, but still warrants investigation.
Adults indoors but no obvious food or garbage source
What it means — The source is structural (dead animal in a void, attic, or crawlspace), not kitchen-related. Do not clean the kitchen — find the carcass.
The real risks, calibrated
Flesh flies do not bite humans. Their risks are contamination from the carcass source and the rare potential for myiasis.
Mechanical food and surface contamination
ModerateOnset: Ongoing while flies are active
Adults move from the carrion source to food and food-contact surfaces, mechanically transferring bacteria. The risk is proportional to fly numbers and kitchen access.
Accidental or facultative myiasis

Flesh fly larvae can occasionally infest open wounds — a U.S. wound-infestation case report exists in the peer-reviewed literature (PMC). This is rare in healthy people in ordinary household situations.

Active decomposition produces persistent odor and biohazardous organic material until the carcass is removed and the site disinfected.
DIY — what works, what backfires
Flesh fly control means finding and removing the dead animal — the same logic as blow flies. The larviparous habit makes it urgent: live larvae may already be developing when you first see adults.
What actually works
- Find and remove the dead animal: listen for buzzing inside wall sections, use a flashlight at gap areas, check the attic insulation, chimney interior, crawlspace, and spaces behind appliances — especially after fall rodent activity in NH.
- Disinfect and deodorize the site after removal using an enzymatic cleaner that breaks down remaining organic material.
- Use light traps to catch remaining adults indoors after carcass removal.
- Seal chimney openings with a quality cap and inspect roof-line gaps to prevent future bird and squirrel entry.
- Conduct rodent exclusion before fall to prevent mice from dying in wall voids — the most common source in NH homes.
What backfires
- Don't spray the room while the carcass remains — fogging kills visible adults but does nothing to the larvae already developing on the hidden source; new adults will keep emerging.
- Don't mistake a flesh fly for a house fly and skip the carcass search — the checkerboard abdomen and three-stripe count identify this as a carcass fly, and the search is the only effective response.
- Don't assume the problem will resolve on its own — without carcass removal, adults keep emerging from developing larvae until the source is exhausted.
- Don't skip rodent exclusion after resolving the immediate outbreak — repeat occurrences the following fall are common without it.
Flesh flies in New Hampshire homes
Flesh flies are present statewide across New Hampshire as a warm-season outdoor fly. They become an indoor concern when a dead animal — most commonly a mouse in a wall void after fall rodent season, or a bird in a chimney or soffit — is trapped inside a heated structure. Because their larvae are deposited live rather than as eggs, fly emergence can begin faster than blow fly outbreaks.
