    Probe and map before you panic

    With a screwdriver handle, systematically tap and gently probe baseboards, trim, sills, and any wood near exterior walls, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas. Note which spots sound hollow, and where wood gives way, note whether the interior is soil-lined (a termite sign), clean and smooth (a carpenter-ant sign), or soft and spongy (a moisture-rot sign). Photograph everything so a professional has a specific, located finding to act on rather than a vague worry. Do not tear out finished wood to investigate further — leave that to whoever confirms the cause.

    Correct the moisture feeding the wood

    Fix plumbing leaks, redirect gutters and downspouts away from the foundation, improve crawl-space or basement ventilation, and dry out any chronically damp area near the affected wood. Damp wood is both more attractive to termites and more prone to the fungal rot that produces a nearly identical hollow sound, so this step helps regardless of which cause is confirmed.

What to check — and what it means

A hollow sound alone doesn't identify the cause. Probe carefully and look at what's actually inside before deciding what you're dealing with.

  • A dull, papery thud versus a solid knock when you tap along baseboards or trim with a screwdriver handle.

    Means: Interior wood loss consistent with insect galleries or rot — a prompt to probe further, not a diagnosis on its own.

  • When gently probed, wood that collapses inward revealing hollow galleries lined with dried mud or soil.

    Means: Strongly suggests subterranean termites — the soil lining is the key tell that separates them from other causes.

  • Clean, smooth, sawdust-free galleries with no soil lining.

    Means: Points to carpenter ants instead — they excavate wood for nesting but don't eat it, per UNH Extension.

  • Soft, spongy, stringy, or crumbly wood that's darker and smells musty.

    Means: Points to moisture or fungal rot rather than termites — fix the underlying dampness either way.

  • Blistered or rippled paint and wall coverings near the floor.

    Means: Possible tunneling underneath the surface — corroborate by probing directly rather than assuming.
