  • Whether the tube is active: break open a small section and look for small, creamy-white workers, then recheck in a few days to see if it's been repaired.

  • Where the tube originates at soil or grade level and where it terminates into wood.

    Means: Confirms the soil-to-wood bridge and shows you the entry point a professional will want to see.

  • Whether the structure is actually a tunnel versus a lump, drip stain, or efflorescence (a white mineral crust).

    Means: Distinguishes a real mud tube from mud-dauber wasp nests or ordinary water staining, avoiding a false alarm.
