Winged insects near a window are not automatically termites. A few quick checks tell you which insect — and how concerned to be.

  • Antennae shape: straight and bead-like versus bent or elbowed.

    Means: Straight, bead-like antennae point to termites; bent, elbowed antennae point to carpenter ants — the quickest single discriminator.

  • Waist shape: uniformly broad and thick versus a pinched, wasp-like waist.

    Means: Termites lack a constricted waist; a pinched waist is an ant trait.

  • Wing length: two pairs of roughly equal length, about twice the body length, versus forewings noticeably longer than hind wings.

    Means: Equal-length wings indicate termites; unequal wings indicate ants.

  • Piles of shed, translucent wings on sills, floors, or in spider webs.

    Means: Swarmers shed their wings shortly after flight, so wing piles indoors are a genuine flag worth following up.

  • Where the insects actually emerged from — next to the foundation or indoors versus an outdoor stump or woodpile.

    Means: Foundation or indoor emergence suggests the structure itself may be involved; a yard swarm from a stump usually isn't cause for concern.
