Used the way the label intends, Ortho Home Defense Insect Killer works — but only for what a perimeter barrier can do. It's a ready-to-use dual-pyrethroid spray (bifenthrin 0.05% + zeta-cypermethrin 0.0125%) you apply as a continuous 4-inch band along interior baseboards and entry points and a 12-inch band up the outside foundation. Done cleanly and continuously, it knocks down insects on contact within hours and reduces entry over the following days. What it does NOT do is eliminate a colony or an established indoor infestation — university IPM confirms perimeter sprays only kill foragers, and the outdoor residual fades in weeks-to-months, not the year the label implies indoors. Reapply outdoors about every 3 months in season, keep the band unbroken, never spray over ant bait you want ants to eat, and if ants or roaches keep returning, that's your signal the source is beyond DIY.

But UC IPM is explicit that exterior perimeter sprays kill only foragers and never reach the colony or queen, so this is a traffic-reducer, not an infestation-ender. Treat it as a preventive perimeter, reapply outdoors seasonally (the residual decays well before the 12-month indoor claim), and if pests keep coming the problem is a source the barrier can't touch.

Reducing seasonal entry of ants and occasional invaders (spiders, earwigs, millipedes) across a clean, continuous exterior band.

The wand-tip applicator makes this feel foolproof, but results ride entirely on tracing one unbroken, label-width line where floor meets wall and around every door and window — coverage discipline, not volume, is the variable that matters.

  1. Clear and dry the band first

    Sweep away leaf litter, cobwebs, and mulch contact along the line you're about to treat so the spray lands on the surface, not on debris.

    Treat on a dry, calm day with no rain forecast for 24+ hours — UV and rain are what destroy an outdoor pyrethroid film.
    Common mistake
    Spraying dirty or wet surfaces — the product binds to debris instead of the surface and never forms a real barrier.
  2. Lay the indoor band

    Hold the wand ~12 inches from the surface and lay a continuous 4-inch band along baseboards, under sinks, behind appliances, and around door and window frames. Spray until slightly wet — never to runoff.

    Do not apply to food, dishes, or food-prep surfaces.
  3. Lay the outdoor band

    Outside, lay a continuous 12-inch band — a few inches up the foundation and out onto the soil or hardscape — plus door thresholds, window frames, weep holes, and utility/pipe penetrations.

    The entry points (thresholds, weep holes, pipe penetrations) are where this product earns its keep — treat them deliberately, not just the open foundation.
  4. Keep the band unbroken

    Maintain one continuous line at label width. Any gap is simply an entry point insects will reroute to.

    Common mistake
    Spraying a visible indoor ant trail and stopping there — you kill the workers you see while the nest keeps producing more.
  5. Let it dry, then reapply on schedule

    Let the band dry completely before people or pets return. Reapply the outdoor band on the label's interval — about every 3 months in season — and after heavy rain.

    Caution
    Keep spray out of storm drains and water: bifenthrin is extremely toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates.

What to expect — and when

This is a prevention tool with a fast visible edge and a slow-fading residual — judge it on entry reduction, not on 'no more bugs, ever.'

  1. First few hours to a day

    Contact knockdown of insects that touch the fresh band — dead ants, spiders, and invaders along the line.

  2. Days 1-7

    Noticeably reduced entry as the residual band intercepts foragers at the perimeter.

  3. Weeks-to-months (outdoors)

    The effect tapers as UV and rain degrade the outdoor film — reduced protection is the cue to reapply.

When results plateau
Traffic drops but activity never fully quits when an indoor harborage or an outdoor nest keeps resupplying insects past the treated line: a perimeter residual intercepts crossers, it doesn't dismantle the colony sending them, so lingering activity means the source sits beyond a band's reach.

When to stop DIY & call a pro

An indoor-and-perimeter residual reduces how many insects cross the treated line, but it never touches the source feeding that traffic. These are the signals that the job is no longer a spray-can job:

  • Ants keep coming despite a clean, continuous, correctly-timed band

    Persistent foragers mean an established colony the barrier can't reach — it needs baiting or a nest treatment, not more perimeter spray.

  • You see large black ants indoors or moisture-damaged wood

    Those point to carpenter ants nesting in structural wood — a wood-destroying pest that requires professional inspection and targeted treatment.

  • Cockroaches persist after treatment

    German cockroaches show widespread pyrethroid resistance and live in harborage a surface band never contacts — an established roach problem is a call-a-pro.

  • The same invaders return every season

    Recurring pressure usually means an exclusion/conducive-conditions problem that a licensed technician can diagnose and correct at the source.
