How to do it

  1. Identify the ant and remove competing food

    Confirm the species if possible, and clean up spills and exposed food so the bait becomes the most attractive option on offer.

    Tip: A dirty counter or open pet-food bowl will out-compete even a good bait.

  2. Place bait on active trails and near entry points

    Put bait stations or gel directly on the trails ants are already using, not on top of spills or randomly around the room, following label-directed placement.

    Caution: Placement matters as much as product choice — off-trail bait often goes untouched.

  3. Do not spray insecticide near the bait

    Avoid any spray, cleaner, or repellent product near active bait — contamination or repellency will stop ants from feeding on it.

    Caution: This is the single most common way a DIY baiting attempt fails.

  4. Leave bait undisturbed for 3–4 days past last feeding

    Resist the urge to clean up or replace bait too soon; give the slow-acting insecticide time to reach the full colony. Refresh any bait that has dried out.

    Tip: Seeing more ants at the bait in the first day or two is often a good sign, not a bad one.

  5. Use refillable stations outdoors for the safest approach

    For outdoor perimeter bait, refillable stations are the safer, more effective option compared to loose bait or broadcast sprays around the foundation.
