How Small of a Hole Can a Rat Fit Through?

 

A common adult rat can squeeze through a hole as small as 1/2 inch (about 13 millimeters) in diameter. This means that if you can fit a pencil or your pinky finger into a gap, a rat can most likely get through it as well. Young rats, or smaller species, may fit through even smaller gaps.

• Inspect the building’s perimeter at ground level for any gaps or holes at least 1/2 inch wide.
• Look for gnawed edges, grease marks, or droppings which may mark rat routes.
• Seal holes with sturdy materials rats cannot chew through, such as steel wool combined with caulking, heavy-gauge metal mesh, or concrete.
• Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair broken vent screens.
• Don’t rely on expanding foam alone—rats easily chew through it.
