Why Does My Home Smell Like Ammonia or Urine?

Mice urinate in micro-droplets continuously as they travel, and urea in that urine breaks down into ammonia, which is why the smell concentrates in tight, poorly ventilated cavities and behind appliances. It's usually distinguishable from a recent cleaning-product smell (which fades within an hour of airing the room out) or a litter box (which traces to the box itself).
