Why You Can't Pin the Smell Down

Two things make a whole-house smell so hard to locate. The first is olfactory fatigue: your nose adapts to a constant smell within minutes, so you stop noticing it at the source while a visitor notices it immediately. The second is your HVAC system, where recirculation and the stack effect move odors far from their origin, meaning the room where you smell it most may not be where it actually starts. A practical first step is to ask someone who doesn't live there where it's strongest; fresh noses find the source faster.

A continuous musky or ammonia-like smell, especially in hidden areas like attics, crawl spaces, or behind walls, often indicates pest urine or droppings, and these odors intensify as an infestation grows. A smell that's strongest in one specific spot, a vent, a corner, a section of wall, frequently means a deceased pest or a nest hidden in the structure. Pest-related smells also tend to get worse when humidity rises, because moist air carries the scent of waste and decomposition more strongly.

Room-by-Room Odor Checklist

Work through the likely sources by the character of the smell. Musty and earthy points to the basement, crawl space, or attic: see musty/mildew smells. Sharp ammonia points to rodents. Sickly-sweet and rotting points to a dead animal: see dead animal odor. A sewer note points to a dry p-trap. A general staleness can be as simple as pet dander accumulation or carpet off-gassing.
