What insecticidal soap actually does
Insecticidal soap's active ingredients are potassium salts of fatty acids, which strip away the protective outer layer of a soft-bodied insect's cuticle and cause rapid dehydration. That's why it works so well on thin-skinned pests and does almost nothing to a hard-shelled beetle — the soap simply can't penetrate a tough exoskeleton the same way. Because it kills on contact rather than through ingestion or a lingering residue, the spray only affects whatever it directly wets at the moment of application.

It's tempting to swap in dish soap, but Clemson HGIC and Kansas State entomologists both warn against it — household detergents and laundry soaps contain degreasers and additives that are "far too harsh" for plant tissue and are far more likely to burn leaves than a product actually formulated and registered as an insecticidal soap. If a homemade batch damages a valued plant, there's also no manufacturer to stand behind it.
