The short answer

Yes, for the right pests, used the right way. Commercial insecticidal soap (potassium salts of fatty acids) kills soft-bodied insects and mites — aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale crawlers, spider mites — by disrupting their cell membranes on contact. What insecticidal soap actually does

Insecticidal soap's active ingredients are potassium salts of fatty acids, which strip away the protective outer layer of a soft-bodied insect's cuticle and cause rapid dehydration. That's why it works so well on thin-skinned pests and does almost nothing to a hard-shelled beetle — the soap simply can't penetrate a tough exoskeleton the same way. Because it kills on contact rather than through ingestion or a lingering residue, the spray only affects whatever it directly wets at the moment of application.

Where it works — and where it doesn't

University of Connecticut Extension lists a long roster of pests it controls well: aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale crawlers, spider mites, thrips, lacebugs, leafhoppers, and more, provided they're soft-bodied and you hit them directly. It has "less effect against insect eggs," which is why a single spray rarely finishes the job — eggs hatch a few days later into pests the earlier spray never touched. It is not the tool for caterpillars, beetles, or borers; those need a pest-specific approach.

The phytotoxicity risk, and how to avoid it

The same soap action that dehydrates an insect's cuticle can also injure a leaf's surface under the wrong conditions. UConn's factsheet flags temperatures above roughly 90°F, high humidity, drought stress, and young or soft new growth as red flags for burn. The fix is simple: spray in the cool of early morning or evening, never in direct hot sun, and skip plants that are already wilting or freshly transplanted.

Don't DIY the mix

It's tempting to swap in dish soap, but Clemson HGIC and Kansas State entomologists both warn against it — household detergents and laundry soaps contain degreasers and additives that are "far too harsh" for plant tissue and are far more likely to burn leaves than a product actually formulated and registered as an insecticidal soap. If a homemade batch damages a valued plant, there's also no manufacturer to stand behind it.
