Why Fungal Growth Happens

 

Fungi thrive when there’s too much moisture, crowded leaves, poor airflow, and old or infected plant debris nearby. Overwatering or water sitting on leaves gives fungi the perfect opportunity to grow. Fungal spores (tiny “seeds” that spread the fungus) can land on wet leaves and start new infections.

 

What You Should Do to Control and Prevent Fungal Growth

 

• Water the Right Way: Always water the soil, not the leaves. Use a watering can with a narrow spout and aim for the base of the plant. Water in the morning so leaves dry during the day, making it harder for fungi to survive.

• Baking Soda Solution: Mix 1 teaspoon baking soda with 1 liter of water and a few drops of mild liquid soap (not detergent). Spray on affected and nearby leaves weekly. This creates an environment where most fungi can’t survive.
• Copper-Based Fungicides: These are widely available and effective, but don’t use too much or too often—they can build up in the soil. Always read and follow the label instructions.
• Milk Spray: Dilute milk (about 1 part milk to 9 parts water). Spray liberally on both sides of leaves every week. Milk creates conditions fungi dislike and can slow their growth, especially for powdery mildew.
