Reading the fade: pattern tells you the cause
Chlorophyll is what makes a leaf green, and anything that interferes with making or moving it around the plant shows up as fading. The pattern of that fade is diagnostic: nitrogen deficiency is mobile within the plant, so the plant pulls nitrogen from older leaves to feed new growth, which is why nitrogen-deficient plants fade uniformly starting with the oldest leaves. Iron and magnesium, by contrast, are less mobile, so their deficiencies show up as interveinal chlorosis — the veins stay green while the tissue between them turns pale or yellow — and this pattern often appears on newer growth first for iron specifically.
Light and watering play a role too
A plant moved to a noticeably dimmer spot, or one that's been chronically underlit for weeks, often fades evenly across the whole plant rather than in the old-leaf or interveinal patterns nutrient deficiencies produce.
