Do ants harm leaves or just eat sap?

Do Ants Harm Leaves or Just Eat Sap?

Ants do not generally eat leaves directly like some insects (for example, caterpillars do). Instead, most ants interact with leaves in an indirect way. Many common garden ants are more interested in the sweet sap or sugary substances found on or around leaves, not the leaves themselves. They often "harvest" these substances, but sometimes their activities can indirectly cause harm to the plant's leaves or overall health.

How Ants Feed: Sap and Honeydew

Ants are attracted to the sugary sap that leaks from wounds or damage in plant stems and leaves. However, they rarely make these holes themselves. Instead, they are highly attracted to another sugary substance called "honeydew." This is a sweet liquid excreted by other small insects like aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs when they feed on plant sap. These insects pierce the plant and suck out its juices; in the process, they create wounds from which sap leaks out and produce honeydew as a waste product.

  • Ants tend to "farm" aphids or scale insects, protecting them from predators and sometimes even moving them to better feeding spots on the plant. In exchange, the ants collect and eat their honeydew.
  • Ants don't directly puncture or eat the leaves to get the sap, but their symbiotic relationship with sap-sucking insects can result in more feeding damage from those pests.

Indirect Harm Caused by Ants

While ants usually don't chew or destroy leaves themselves, their presence often means there is an infestation of plant-sucking insects like aphids, scales, or mealybugs. This can seriously harm plants in several ways:

  • The plant-sucking insects damage leaves by piercing them and draining out the sap, which causes leaves to curl, turn yellow, wilt, or fall off.
  • The honeydew produced by these insects creates a sticky film on leaves, which can lead to the growth of "sooty mold," turning the surface of the leaves black and blocking sunlight, which harms the plant’s ability to make food.
  • Ants protect these sap-sucking insects from their natural enemies, causing the infestation to last longer and do more damage.

Therefore, while ants are not directly responsible for eating or harming the leaves, they greatly contribute to leaf damage by protecting and encouraging the real leaf-harming insects.

Special Case: Leafcutter Ants

There is one notable exception: leafcutter ants. These are mostly found in the Americas, especially Central and South America. Leafcutter ants actually cut pieces of leaves and carry them away, not to eat directly, but to use as a substrate for growing fungus, which is their primary food. Leafcutter ants can cause major damage to leaves, but this is not the case for most ants seen in gardens and homes in other parts of the world.

Summing Up: Ants and Their Effect on Leaves

  • Most ants do not eat leaves and do not directly harm them.
  • Ants do not normally eat the plant sap directly unless there is an open wound — instead, they collect sugary liquids, especially honeydew, from sap-sucking pests.
  • The main risk to leaves comes from the increased activity and survivability of aphids, mealybugs, and scales due to ants “farming” them — this leads to leaf damage, sticky residue, and sooty mold.
  • In rare cases, mainly with leafcutter ants, leaves are actually cut up and carried away, but this is highly unlikely in typical home gardens or non-tropical regions.

If you see a lot of ants on your plants, especially along with sticky residue or visible aphids and sooty mold, it’s a sign you should address the sap-sucking insects first. Reducing their numbers will also discourage ants from staying on your plants and will prevent further indirect damage to your leaves.
