Search "kill pantry beetles" and the instinct is to reach for a spray. Extension entomologists say the opposite: UC IPM's guidance on stored-product pests is direct — "Insecticides aren't recommended for any of the pantry pests. Spraying pesticides on or near food may cause greater harm to you and your family than would pantry pests." These beetles almost always arrive already inside a package of flour, cereal, pet food, or dried goods (UConn Extension), so the fix is finding that source and removing it, not fumigating the cabinet.

That doesn't mean chemistry has zero role. How to do it

  1. Inspect every dry good in the pantry

    Check flour, cereal, grains, spices, pet food, and dried goods for larvae, webbing, or adult beetles. Use a flashlight to check deep in cracks and corners.

    Tip: Sift suspect flour or grain through a fine strainer — larvae and cast skins show up quickly.

  2. Discard infested items in sealed bags, outside

    Bag the infested package tightly and remove it to an outdoor trash bin immediately rather than leaving it in an indoor bin where beetles can re-emerge.

  3. Vacuum and clean shelves, cracks, and corners

    Vacuum thoroughly, then wipe shelves down; empty the vacuum bag/canister outside immediately so trapped insects can't crawl back out.

  4. Store remaining goods airtight; freeze what you can

    Move flour, grains, and other susceptible dry goods into airtight glass or hard plastic containers. Freeze staples for at least four days to kill any eggs already present.

    Tip: Rotate stock so nothing sits unopened in the pantry for months at a time.

  5. Set pheromone monitoring traps

    Place non-insecticidal pheromone traps near pantry shelves to catch and track any rebound activity over the following weeks.

    Tip: A trap catching beetles two or three weeks after cleanup usually means a source was missed — inspect again.
