Does this actually work?
Rodenticide baiting reliably kills rodents when used correctly in tamper-resistant stations, but it carries real primary- and secondary-poisoning risk that trapping and exclusion simply don't — which is why baiting should supplement, not replace, the mechanical basics.
Evidence: The EPA's 2008 Risk Mitigation Decision pulled second-generation anticoagulants from consumer shelves specifically because of documented pet and raptor poisonings; state and peer-reviewed wildlife reviews still find anticoagulant residues in over 60% of tested hawks and owls (Mass.gov; PMC), evidence the risk persists even with today's tighter consumer rules.

Chemical rodenticides work — but they're the highest-risk tool in the box
How it works
Moderate DIYRodenticide baits are eaten by rodents and kill through one of three mechanisms: anticoagulants block vitamin K recycling, causing fatal internal bleeding over days; bromethalin is a neurotoxin that disrupts brain-cell energy production; cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) triggers fatal hypercalcemia. All three require the rodent to die somewhere on its own — which is the root of secondary-poisoning risk to whatever eats the carcass.

Search "how to get rid of rats" and rodenticide bait is usually the first answer. It's not wrong — anticoagulant, bromethalin, and cholecalciferol baits reliably kill mice and rats — but it's incomplete. Every bait has to poison the rodent, and a poisoned rodent doesn't vanish; it dies somewhere, and something else may eat it. That's secondary poisoning, and it's why the EPA pulled the most dangerous rodenticide class off consumer shelves in 2008.

How to do it

Trap indoors as the first-line method
Set snap traps along walls and runways before considering bait indoors. Trapping carries zero poisoning risk and confirms what you're dealing with.
Caution: Don't skip this step in favor of bait — trapping is the safer default for most homes.
If baiting, use tamper-resistant stations only
Place consumer-grade bait — first-generation anticoagulant, bromethalin, or cholecalciferol — only inside a locked, tamper-resistant station positioned along a confirmed runway or burrow entrance, per the label.
Caution: Never place loose bait anywhere a pet, child, or wild animal can reach it.
Never exceed what the label allows
Follow the product label exactly for placement, station type, and reapplication interval — the label is the law, and it's written around the documented poisoning risks.
Caution: Second-generation anticoagulants (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone) are restricted-use in NH; if a product isn't labeled for consumer sale, it isn't legal to DIY.
Search for and remove carcasses
Check likely dead-ends — under decks, in wall voids, along foundations — every few days and dispose of carcasses in a sealed bag in a covered outdoor bin. This is the single biggest lever against secondary poisoning.
Tip: A carcass under a deck or shed is exactly what draws a hawk, owl, or fox to your yard.
Reassess and call a pro if it isn't working
If activity continues after a few weeks of correct station use, sealed entry points, and diligent trapping, the population or entry points exceed what a consumer program can fix.
