Black Rat

Black rats, also called roof rats, are agile rodents that often seek shelter indoors during cold months. They are smaller and more slender than other rats, with a pointed nose and long tail. In January, they move inside homes, attics, and garages to escape freezing temperatures and find food. Their presence can be identified by droppings, gnaw marks, and scratching noises in walls or ceilings. They can contaminate food and spread diseases, making them a significant winter pest.

House Mouse: House mice are small, grayish rodents that are highly adaptable and can squeeze through tiny openings. During January, they enter buildings to stay warm and access food sources. They are active year-round but become more noticeable in winter as they seek shelter. House mice can cause damage by chewing on wires, insulation, and stored items, and their droppings can pose health risks.

German Cockroach: German cockroaches are light brown insects with two dark stripes on their backs. They thrive in warm, humid environments, making kitchens and bathrooms ideal hiding spots during cold months. In January, their activity increases indoors as they search for warmth and moisture. These cockroaches reproduce quickly and can contaminate food, surfaces, and utensils, leading to potential health issues.

Cluster Fly: Cluster flies are larger than houseflies and move sluggishly. In winter, they gather in large numbers inside attics, wall voids, and unused rooms to hibernate. On sunny days in January, they may become active and appear at windows, trying to get outside. While they do not damage property or spread disease, their presence can be a nuisance due to the sheer number of flies clustering together.

Silverfish: Silverfish are small, wingless insects with silvery scales and a fish-like shape. They prefer damp, cool areas such as basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. In January, they are often found indoors because the cold weather outside drives them to seek warmth and moisture. Silverfish feed on paper, glue, and fabrics, which can lead to damage of books, wallpaper, and clothing.

Brown Recluse Spider: Brown recluse spiders are light to dark brown with a distinctive violin-shaped mark on their back. They hide in undisturbed areas like closets, basements, and attics during winter. In January, they may become more visible indoors as they seek warmth. While bites are rare, their venom can cause serious skin reactions, making their presence concerning in homes.

Boxelder Bug: Boxelder bugs are black with red or orange markings and are about half an inch long. They enter buildings in large numbers during fall to overwinter and remain hidden in wall voids or attics through January. On warmer winter days, they may become active and appear inside homes. Although they do not bite or cause structural damage, they can stain surfaces and become a nuisance when present in large groups.
